Great stuff, cheers, I agree with you about the anti-native species attitude. It seems there's a lot of unexamined thinking around and not just about plants.

"It seems there's a lot of unexamined thinking around and not just about plants." Bang on Stefan- this reflects a general attitude that manifest in many forms like racism, ant-immigrants, homophobia as well as speciesism...Take care. Hwyl!

Just ordered Fred Pearce’s book for some more perspectives on allowing land to do its stuff and the role of non native species. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks Stefan. I thought Fred Pearce's book was very good, a realistice take on non native speices. I feel that the anti-native species attitude can be unhelpful- we're going to need all the species we can get as we keep turning up the thermostat of global warming. If you're interested, I wrote a fuller description of Argel which is on my website and can be found here:

David Holmgren was the first person I heard talking about "weedscapes" and re-combinant ecologies, new ecologies that will arise combining native and non-native species and that these could be richer and more productive than existing ecologies. They're also known now as novel ecosystems and there's a lot of stuff on the web.

Thanks again for you comments.
